1-25 Vienna Accordion Festival

(www.akkordeonfestival.at) Vienna’s eighth accordion festival will see accordion players from all over the world performing every sort of music – from traditional folk songs to punk and pop. Musicians appearing include French ensemble Zamballarana, Austrian group Attwenger and international outfit Dobrek Bistro.

Renoir Landscapes 1865-1883 (www.nationalgallery.org.uk) Throughout his career Renoir painted landscapes, but his early work remains the most significant due to his bold experimentation with structure and technique. The National Gallery has compiled a retrospective exhibition of around 70 of these paintings, featuring landscapes from the South of France, North Africa, Italy and Guernsey.

2-31 Helsinki Anna Karenina

(www.operafin.fi) Tolstoy’s classic tale of a Russian noblewoman who becomes embroiled in a passionate affair, and having abandoned her loveless marriage must sacrifice her position in society, is brought to life by the Finnish National Opera. Here, choreographer Alexei Ratmansky focuses on the fatal love triangle between Anna, her husband and Count Vronsky.

3 Copenhagen Danish Music Awards

(www.dr.dk) Held at Copenhagen’s KB Hallen, this yearly awards ceremony honours the best that Danish music has to offer, as well as featuring performances from both Danish and international artists. This year’s event will feature performances from Thomas Helmig, Nephew, Nik & Jay, Natasja and Veto.

16-31Budapest Spring Festival

(www.festivalcity.hu) First held in 1981, this annual event showcases the best in Hungarian theatre, dance, music and art, as well as attracting internationally renowned artists. This year’s line-up includes the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Nigel Kennedy Quintet, pianist Maria João Pires and saxophonist Branford Marsalis.

8-18 Bruges Cinema Novo Festival

(www.cinemanovo.be) Originally known as the Third World Film Festival, Bruges’ Cinema Novo Festival provides a showcase for new films from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Short films and feature films are shown at the Lumière and Liberty cinemas, while lectures, exhibitions, workshops and debates are scheduled around the screenings.

16-18 Stockholm Wilderness Fair

(www.vildmarksmassan.se) Outdoor types should head to Stockholm’s International Fairs and Congress Centre for the Wilderness Fair. Exhibitions there will focus on travel, sport, fishing and wildlife photography, while visitors can try their hand at diving, climbing and archery. Foodies can even cook up a meal in the outdoor kitchen.

8-25 Brussels Clown Festival

(www.catastrophe.be) Since 1998, troupes of clowns have been descending on the Saint-Gilles area of Brussels for the annual Clown Festival. This year’s performances will feature both fresh talent and experienced artists, and will incorporate elements of theatre, dance and circus, ranging from the purely comedic to the distinctly offbeat.

17-25 Venice International Boat Show

(www.festivaldelmare.com) The Venice International Boat Show sees hundreds of exhibitors and fleets of boats converge on the Stazione Marittima every year. This March, there will be new sections dedicated to fishing, watersports and diving, and activities will include a father and son regatta and a Polynesian canoe workshop.

23 Lisbon Spring Festival

(www.atl-turismolisboa.pt) Held in Belem’s Cultural Centre, the Festa de Primavera features shows, concerts, recitals and exhibitions, many of which are free. Visitors will also be able hear the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, who traditionally perform on the eve of the festival.
