Savile Row surfs a new wave

You no longer have to travel to London to taste the Savile Row experience. 40 Savile Row is one of the first tailors to offer part of the process online. Via its website, out-of-towners can choose their favourite style of shirt, select from a wide array of high-quality Italian cotton fabrics and measure it with a 3D model to fit the right body shape. Pre-styled shirts are also on display for instant purchase.

The journey from website to closet takes an average of five to seven weeks, but if you have time on your hands you can create a full wardrobe in your personal gallery and edit as you wish prior to making your final selection. 40savilerow.co.uk

Made in Romania

Romania is perhaps best known as the land of vampires, but it’s also one of Europe’s key clothing producers. The sleepy town of Timisoara, Romania, houses a factory, ModaTim, where many of your clothes are probably manufactured, from Dolce & Gabbana to H&M. Its success shows that the ‘Made in Timisoara’ label now guarantees quality on a par with the hand-craftsmanship of Italy. A demand for affordable, expert manufacturing has made Romania a major supplier of clothing to the EU, with exports of €3.5bn a year. But despite ModaTim’s success, figures for Romanian textile exports show a trend downwards, as producers look to less expensive markets in the Far East. Some observers predict that EU membership and rising competition may lead to the closure of up to a quarter of Romania’s 8,000 garment companies. modatim.ro

Prada phones it in

For the ultimate mobile fashion accessory then it’s time to splash out on the new Prada phone. Miuccia Prada, in association with LG, launched the first completely touch-screen phone at the end of February. The Prada Phone by LG (technically, the KE850) includes a video player, Bluetooth, high-quality camera and MP3 player. Stamped clearly with the Prada look, the phone has a minimalist design featuring a stylish white-on-black interface and leather case. Unlike other out-of-reach fashion phones, the Prada phone is aimed at the high-end mass market, and is available in Europe for around €600. www.pradaphonebylg.com

Linda Farrow sunglasses

Sunglasses are the must-have accessory for supermodels, celebrities and megastars in the spotlight, and this season they’re loving the ultra-luxurious vintage sunglasses by Linda Farrow. In 1970, at the age of 23, Farrow formed her own fashion label with her optician husband. Together they designed and produced hundreds of cool pieces, such as the wraparound style and revolutionary polarised lenses, and were key distributors of Balenciaga, Emilio Pucci, Sonia Rykiel, Stirling Moss and Guy Laroche.

In April 2003, the brand was relaunched after her son, Simon Jablon, discovered thousands of her sunglasses in perfect condition in a London warehouse. The collections were an instant hit, and were picked up by clients including Kate Moss, Nicole Richie, David Beckham, Heidi Klum and Lenny Kravitz. With Jablon as the creative director, Linda Farrow keeps pushing boundaries with creative designers such as Christopher Kane, Luella Bartley and Eley Kishimoto. www.lindafarrowvintage.com
