THE PERFECT TEN
To celebrate his 10th anniversary in the fashion business, designer Matthew Williamson is holding a retrospective exhibition at London’s Design Museum.
The lavish event follows Williamson’s acclaimed return to London Fashion Week from New York this September and will run from 17 October through 31 January next year.
Cleverly titled Matthew Williamson: 10 Years in Fashion, the retrospective will celebrate the designer’s signature colour-infused, bohemian pieces favoured by the likes of Sienna Miller, Helena Christensen and Kate Hudson. In tandem with the exhibition, Williamson will preview a selection of key pieces in the windows of private bank Coutts, the event’s sponsor, at its headquarters on London’s Strand.
Stella steps into lingerie for 2008
Stella McCartney is set to launch a much anticipated lingerie line for spring/summer 2008. The range of underwear follows her newly launched organic skincare range called Care by Stella McCartney. Like her womenswear collections, it will feature pretty silk, organic cotton and georgette silk chiffon in her signature palette of dusty pinks, creams, pearl greys and powder blues. The line will focus on “naturally sexy, confident and modern designs,”
Stella says, and will aim to fill the gap in the market below high-end lingerie brands such as La Perla. Created under licence with Bendon, the manufacturer behind Elle Macpherson’s Intimates line for the past 17 years, the lingerie will be stocked at Stella McCartney stores as well as speciality shops across the globe, including Selfridges, Neimans, Nordstrom, Holt Renfrew and La Rinascente.
WATCH THAT PUMA GO
Puma is aiming to introduce its brand to the luxury lifestyle market with the Urban Mobility collection. Designed for those on the go, the sleek line includes a wood-panelled Cabin Trolley (€270), Document Wallet (€100) and an X-Ray Belt (€65) that has no metal parts so you can walk through airport security without having to unbuckle it (available in two sizes). Alongside a selection of laptop bags and pouches, all featuring the cut-out Puma logo, it’s the limited edition Urban Mobility holdall (€650) that really sets the line apart. Drawing inspiration from industrial design, it’s available in white nappa leather with crisp black detailing, signature glossy cherry wood base, a silver plaque engraved with ‘Urban Mobility ltd edition’ and its own limited edition number plus two white leather pouches. With only 600 available (at selected stores worldwide), snap yours up now. After all, life’s a journey so you may as well travel it in style.
MITTE BOUTIQUE
Strange Fruit is the latest contender on Berlin’s boutique shopping circuit. Located on the fashionable Gendarmenmarkt in Mitte, this new concept store is the work of Pierre Jorge Gonzalez and Judith Haase – the architect duo previously responsible for Acne Jean’s store, also in Berlin, and Self Service magazine’s dazzling new offices in Paris. It’s worth a visit for the striking interior alone. The vast architectural structure at 33 Markgrafenstraße is split over two floors, stocking a definitive list of up-and-coming international design talent including Gareth Pugh, Cassetteplaya, Richard
Nicholl, Jonathan Saunders and Anne Valerie Hash. You’ll also find established but avant-garde favourites such as Bernhard Willhelm, Hussein Chalayan and Junya Watanabe. The impressive range of accessories includes sunglasses by Jeremy Scott and shoes by Parisian fashion-cum-record-label Kitsune. Expect the designers to change with the seasons.
Bikkembergs takes a hike
Juggling work, family and a love of the great outdoors? The Dirk Bikkembergs’ Sport Couture Rally Boot is the perfect footwear for the man on the move. Part of the groundbreaking Antwerp Six – a group of Flemish designers that includes Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten and Walter von Beirendonck, who collectively introduced their designs to London Fashion Week in the mid-80s – Dirk is renowned for his consistently street-chic futuristic designs. For the Rally Boot, he drew his inspiration from Porsche, combining utility with aesthetics to provide luxury and comfort without sacrificing style. Available in three colour variations (caramel, coffee and black), the boot includes rubber panels strengthened with protective Sport Couture metal plates and Velcro fastening while the supple leather ensures flexibility and support for the sports-minded man with an interest in fashion.
Splurge
Add a splash of colour to your wardrobe this autumn with a red, white and black plaid shirt, like this vintage plaid jacket by Woolrich for €525. No longer the stereotypical attire of lumberjacks or outdoorsy types, a well-cut plaid shirt is an autumn/winter essential that not only looks great but will keep you snug on those long winter nights.
