When the temperature rises, there’s nothing that hits the spot quite like a beach. It’s extraordinary to think we spend our lives buying garments to conceal our bodies, yet somehow all the normal rules get thrown out of the window at the sight of sand and we suddenly feel it’s appropriate to share towel space with strangers wearing only a tiny piece of clothing keeping a modicum of decorum. But when the sun goes down, we need somewhere special to retreat to for aftersun application. What follows is our hot pick of the best secret watery hideaways just footsteps from the beach, from lakeside cabins surrounded by forests to clifftop hotels with views of the glittering Mediterranean below.

Cabin fever

Korpijärvi, Finland

Summer cabins are a big part of Finnish life. Decamping to the lakes is de riguer at this time of the year and one in four Finns owns their own mökki. As far as they are concerned, the more basic the cabin the better – the only essential is a sauna. OK, there’s no beach, but when you’re perched on the clifftops of the Amalficoast why would you want to slum it with the hoi polloi? Knokke-Heist, Belgium

With its pristine white cabins and rows of windsocks, Knokke-Heist’s coastline has a bygone elegance about it – you half-expect to see swimmers in striped Victorian bathing suits. Godly gorgeous

Hydra, Greece

In a setting that would befit the most discerning of Greek gods, the Four Seasons (not related to the glam chain) is shaded by olive trees and perched on the edge of the Mediterranean sea on the idyllic island of Hydra. Hop on the hydrofoil from Athens for the 45-minute crossing, then transfer to a water taxi that drops you off on the beach in front of the hotel. The six suites offer sublime sea views and are all tastefully decorated, most featuring their own terrace or balcony. Come nightfall the hotel’s tavern comes into its own, serving authentic Greek dishes accompanied by the lull of the gently lapping shore just metres away.

Los Caños de Meca, Spain

At the foot of the Breña y Marismas del Barbate coastal reserve and just south of Cadiz, the eight Andalucian cottages of Casas Karen are nestled in a rambling, colourful garden. Värmdö, Sweden

June signals the start of a migration as thousands of Swedes abandon the capital and head to their summer cabins on Stockholm’s archipelago just 20 minutes away. It’s just a flipflop away from a sandy beach and private jetty, while foraging enthusiasts can catch fish for their supper or head into the forest for a spot of berry-picking.

De authentieke witte strandcabines en vele rijen windzakken van dit deel van de Belgische kustlijn heeft een zekere elegantie uit vervlogen tijden over zich – je zou niet meteen opkijken als lustige zwemmers er in gestreepte Victoriaanse zwempakken uit de zee zouden stappen.
